According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the Fair Labor Standards Act establishes 14 as the minimum age a young person must be in order to work in a shop. This age applies to all non-agricultural jobs that are considered safe to perform.
The Fair Labor Standards Act also stipulates that a person must be at least 18 years of age to do jobs that involve hazardous work, such as excavation and mining. Jobs that require driving vehicles or heavy equipment also have age restrictions. The rules vary when it comes to minors and agricultural work. State labor laws may establish additional age requirements.
