The oldest English football club is Sheffield FC. The club was founded in 1857 by Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest, two cricketers from Northern England. Games were between club players until 1860, when Hallam FC, the world´s second football club, was formed.
The earliest evidence of football in some form can be traced back to ancient China and Greece. In England during the 1900s, schools across the country had their own version of the game. Creswick and Prest streamlined the sport by making a clear and universal set of rules that put football on the path to the popular game it is today.
