The oldest recorded religion in the world is Hinduism, which is speculated to have come into existence between 3000 and 1500 B.C. The Hindu religion developed during the same time frame as the Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilizations and is the third largest religion in the world as of 2014.
Worldwide, approximately 1 billion people follow Hinduism. While Nepal is the only official Hindu state in the world as of 2014, approximately 98 percent of all Hindu devotees live in the Indian subcontinent. According to a 2012 estimate, 80.5 percent of the population of India, or approximately 960 million people, follow the Hindu religion.
