The oldest used car retailer in the United States is Hare Chevrolet located in Noblesville, Indiana. The dealership, which has moved and changed names several times, has been operating since 1847 when it first opened as a workshop and store for carriages and wagons.
Wesley Hare founded the business under the name Carriage and Wagon Works, changing it to W. Hare & Son when his sons joined him in the business. Automobiles were added to the sales floor during the early 20th century, eventually outpacing the carriage business and prompting several changes in location. Hare Chevrolet, the name by which the business is currently known, is operated by the sixth generation of the same family.
