Why are oleographs common at starving artist painting sales?

Oleographs are common at starving artist sales because unsuspecting buyers buy them up quickly, believing they are getting a great discount on the original painting prices. The truth, though, is that the artists are deceiving buyers by offering imitation oil paintings as original hand-painted artwork, opines antiques appraiser Dr. Lori.

Oleographs are cheap because they are imitation paintings either machine-printed onto canvases or mass-produced in sweatshops and factories. When the oleographs are completed, the producers apply a form of lacquer to the paintings' surfaces to mimic brushstrokes and make them look like hand-painted work. However, they are not the handiwork of genuine artists, and bargain hunters need to be aware of such false claims when shopping.
