What is a one-act play?

A one-act play is a short piece of drama that consists of only one act. It usually has one or more scenes, but does not exceed one act.

One-acts are used on Broadway, in high schools and colleges and as many audition pieces. Many one-act plays are used in schools or small theater companies with small casts. There are many royalty-free one-acts that are easily accessible for teachers to use in their classrooms. Some poplar one-act plays include "A Marriage Proposal" by Anton Chekhov, "The Goat" or "Who is Sylvia?" by Edward Albee and "The Long Christmas Dinner" by Thornton Wilder.
