What is OPM disability retirement?

OPM disability retirement is a benefit that is available to all Federal and Postal employees who can't continue working in their current jobs due to medical disability. Federal employees who have worked for 18 months under the Federal Employees Retirement System are eligible for OPM disability benefits.

Federal employees enrolled in the Civil Service Retirement System are required to have worked for at least 5 years to qualify for the benefits. Another eligibility requirement is that the medical condition must be expected to last for at least one year. The agency must also certify that it is unable to accommodate the employee's disabling condition in his current position.
