What is "OPS" in baseball?

On-base plus slugging percentage, or OPS, is a baseball statistic that is calculated by combining a hitter's on-base percentage and slugging average. The statistic is a form of sabermetrics, which is a mathematical analysis of game activity.

On-base percentage measures a batter's capacity to reach base, while slugging percentage measures the capacity of a batter to hit with power when hitting doubles, triples and home runs. A high OPS indicates that a player is able to hit for power and reach base. Players with a OPS of .900 or more are considered to be among the best hitters in baseball.
