The organs found behind the lower left ribcage include the spleen, the pancreas and the colon. The lower left ribcage is anatomically known as the left hypochondrial region.
The spleen occupies the most space in this anatomical region. This organ is responsible for the filtration of red blood cells. This means that healthy red blood cells pass through unimpeded, but damaged red blood cells are trapped and broken down.
The spleen retains any useful minerals such as iron while eliminating waste products. This iron is transferred to bone marrow, where it is used to produce hemoglobin. Red blood cells need hemoglobin to transport oxygen around the body.
