The liver is the organ located behind the right rib cage, according to WebMD. It is composed of two lobes, but both of them are located underneath the rib cage on the right side.
The liver is fairly large, at 3 pounds in a healthy adult. It works with the pancreas, gallbladder and intestines to filter, digest and absorb nutrients from food and liquid. Specifically, the liver works to filter the blood and remove toxins coming from the digestive tract, leaving it clean for the rest of the body. It also metabolizes certain drugs and secretes bile that lubricates the intestines.
