The first Hudson's Bay department store opened in Kamloops, Canada, in 1911. The first sales shop opened in Fort Langley in 1857. Even earlier, a royal charter in 1670 established the Hudson's Bay Company as a fur trading post.

Hudson's Bay Company was established by two Frenchman in the mid-1600s. As the fur trade became obsolete, the company began a retail program in 1912 that established department stores in Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon and Winnipeg. As of 2015, the company has a global presence with 460 stores and 65,000 employees. The company portfolio includes Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue stores in the United States.
