What is original Medicare?

Original Medicare is medical coverage managed by the federal government that includes both Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). It differs from a Medicare Advantage Plan, which only provides Part C insurance (hospital and medical) through private insurance companies approved by Medicare.
With Original Medicare, the patient can go to any doctor, hospital or other provider that accepts Medicare. With Medicare Advantage, the patient is limited to doctors, hospitals or other providers that are within their insurance plan. Original Medicare usually has a Part B premium to pay each month, as well as a deductible and coinsurance if necessary.
