Is the original Shamu alive?

The original Shamu died on August 23, 1971. Since then the name has been used by a variety of male and female killer whales performing at SeaWorld's Shamu show, which is the theme park's most popular event.

Shamu was caught in October 1965, according to PBS, and was the first intentional live capture of a female killer whale. She was sold to SeaWorld San Diego later that year. During her final year of performing, Shamu was retired after attacking a SeaWorld employee who was attempting to ride her.

SeaWorld currently operates three theme parks with locations in Orlando, Fla., San Diego, Calif.

and San Antonio, Texas.
