The original version of "Cinderella" was released on December 25, 1899. The film was done in French and was directed by Frenchman Georges Melies. As with the more well-known versions produced by Walt Disney and others, it was based on the fairy tale by Charles Perrault.
The original version of "Cinderella" was released by Méliès's Star Film Company in France. The film was in black and white and was just six minutes long. The film's cast included Mademoiselle Barral as Cinderella, Bleuette Bernon as the Fairy Godmother, Monsieur Carmelli as the Prince, Jehanna d'Alcy as the Queen, and Georges Melies himself as the genie of the midnight clock.
