The very first film adaptation of "Tarzan" was released in 1918. Titled "Tarzan of the Apes," the silent film starred Elmo Lincoln. The film came only four years after Edgar Rice Burroughs published his novel.

This adaptation bears a closer resemblance to Burroughs' original plot than any subsequent film. It was filmed on location in Morgan City, Louisiana. The filmed proved to be a stunning success, and Burroughs reaped substantial financial rewards. Two sequels were made in rapid succession: "Son of Tarzan" and "Revenge of Tarzan." The first "Tarzan" film with sound was 1932's "Tarzan the Ape Man." This film featured Olympian Johnny Weismueller and introduced the character's iconic yell.
