Pork can be described by the specific cut or preparation being referenced or by the more general term "meat." Pancetta, bacon, ham, ribs and belly are a few of the many different pork products.

Humans began domesticating pigs in China around 4900 B.C. They have been raised in Europe since approximately 1500 B.C. Pigs were introduced to the Americas by explorers such as Christopher Columbus and Hernando de Soto at the turn of the 16th century.

Nearly the entire carcass of the pig can be used in cooking, including the organs, skin and tail. Some followers of Judaism and Islam do not eat pork due to religious prohibitions.
