More trendy options to replace "grandfather" as of 2015 include grandude, papi, papster, buddy and bigpop. Some people use the equivalent in another language, such as the Italian "nonno," Spanish "abuelo," Filipino "lolo," or the Greek "pappous."

More playful options include grumpy, skipper, doodad, faux-pa and baboo. Some parents choose to incorporate a portion of the grandfather's name into the word as a way to differentiate between two or more grandfathers. About 25 percent of surveyed parents stated that children name grandfathers out of baby babble that sticks.
