An over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide solution is effective in drying out and reducing the size of boils, according to 'Prevention.' The solution also works to kills the bacteria in the boil and should especially be used on larger lumps.
Antibacterial ointments such as Neosporin or Bacitracin can also be used to eliminate the bacteria in boils, state the health experts at 'Prevention.' While most boils can be treated with home remedies such as warm compresses and salt water solutions, patients experiencing multiple boils, boils with large amounts of pus, those in the facial area or increased redness around the infection are encouraged to consult a physician.
