Mebendazole is only sold with a doctor's prescription and is not available over-the-counter, according to Drugs.com. The medicine is used to treat various cases of worm infections.
Mebendazole works by keeping the worm from absorbing glucose, and therefore, causing energy loss and eventual death of the worm. Patients taking mebendazole for hookworms, roundworms and/or whipworms might need a second course. Patients taking it for pinworms should keep in mind that pinworms are easily passed from one person to another. As such, everyone in the household should take mebendazole in the case of an infection. Fatty foods make it easier for the body to absorb the medicine efficiently, adds Drugs.com.
