Gatorade is owned by PepsiCo. As of 2014, PepsiCo is the parent company of 22 different food and beverage brands. Quaker, Tropicana, Cheetos, Lays and Lipton are all examples, along with Gatorade, of some of PepsiCo's top-selling brands.
Gatorade was invented in 1965 by researchers from the University of Florida in an effort to help the football team combat the effects of playing in the heat and humidity. The researchers found that Gatorade helped to replace the fluids and electrolytes lost through the athletes' sweat. The football team found the drink to be so successful that the following season the Gators went on to win the Orange Bowl for the first time in school history.
