What is a pacman frog?

Pac Man frogs are South American horned frogs. The name Pac Man frog was derived from the wide mouth and rounded body that resembles the Pac Man video game character.

Pac Man frogs vary in color, but green and yellow with spotting is normal. They are sedentary and inactive as hunters, preferring to burrow and wait for prey to come close. Some species of Pac Man frog sleep during the day, while others sleep at night.

When a Pac Man frog suffers from food scarcity or dry conditions, it encases itself with a tough, outer skin layer. Once conditions are optimal again, the skin is shed and eaten.
