Pain relief options for the painful heartburn and chest pain sometimes associated with hiatal hernia include medications for heartburn and surgery to reduce the hernia, according to WebMD. Medications that treat heartburn include antacids, H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors.
Medications doctors recommend for heartburn are antacids, H2 blockers such as Zantac and Pepcid, and proton pump inhibitors such as Nexium and Protonix. There seems to be a link between gastroesophageal reflux disease and hiatal hernia, although one is not proven to cause the other, explains WebMD. Heartburn is a symptom of gastrointestinal reflux disease and can also cause chest pain.
