How do you paint over mold and mildew?

To paint over mold and mildew, prepare the surface with mold or mildew for painting by protecting surrounding areas, scrubbing with a bleach solution, rinsing in tap water and drying. Then, apply a mold inhibiting primer, and cover with a top coat.

1. Protect surrounding areas

   When working outdoors, water the landscaping, and cover any plants you might splash with bleach. Indoors, remove any furnishings from the area, and cover the flooring with plastic sheeting.

2. Mix the bleach solution

   Wear rubber gloves and eye protection when working with bleach. Mix one part bleach with three parts tap water. Do not add ammonia or detergent to the bleach solution.

3. Apply the bleach solution

   Apply the solution to the walls using a sponge. Use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub the mildew. Allow the bleach solution to soak for 10 minutes.

4. Rinse the solution away

   Use a clean sponge and tap water to rinse the solution from the stained area. Dry the rinse water with an clean old towel. Allow the wall to dry completely before proceeding.

5. Prime the surface

   Apply a mold-inhibiting primer to the surface. Consult the primer instructions for the drying time before applying the finish coat.

6. Apply the top coats

   Apply the finish paint in two thin coats for best results.
