Does a Pap smear indicate pregnancy?

The results of a Pap smear do not indicate whether a woman is pregnant. A Pap smear examines the cells of the cervix for signs of cervical cancer or the presence of abnormal cells that may indicate the need for additional testing for gynecological problems, such as infections and some sexually transmitted diseases.

Physicians conduct a Pap smear as part of routine prenatal care for pregnant women, and the test itself does not pose any risk to the growing fetus. Treatments following abnormal Pap smear results may either be conducted safely during the pregnancy or following the birth of the baby.
