The U.S. Department of State issues United States passports. Within that agency, the Bureau of Consular Affairs receives and reviews applications and grants or denies passports.

As of 2015, over 9,000 Passport Agencies throughout the United States accept passport applications, including post offices, federal and state courts, city and county offices and public libraries. These agencies pass the passport applications along with required fees to the U.S. Department of State. Routine passport processing takes four to six weeks.

United States passports provide nationals with proof of citizenship and allow them to re-enter the country once they leaves its borders. Passports remain valid for 10 years.
