Pediatricians can work in private practice offices, community health centers, schools, health maintenance organizations and hospitals. They may also work for the military or government. Pediatricians are licensed physicians who specialize in children's health issues.
Pediatricians also may work in research clinics, studying health issues that affect children and their families. Sometimes they work in government offices advocating for children's health and writing policies that affect children. Pediatricians see and treat child patients from the time the children are newborns until they are 21 years old. They work an average of 50 hours per week, often making less money than doctors in other specialties.
