The Carolina Reaper is the hottest chili pepper on the Scoville scale, as of 2015. In 2013, it received a rating of 1,569,300 Scoville Heat Units, at least 175 times hotter than the jalapeno and comparable to pepper spray.

The Scoville scale measures the amount of heat-inducing capsaicinoid compounds in a chili or other substance. The Carolina Reaper pepper is grown by Smokin' Ed Currie's PuckerButt Pepper Company in South Carolina. It is a small red pepper hybrid between a habanero and a Naja Viper pepper. To avoid serious burns, do not eat the pepper raw and avoid touching it with bare skin.
