As of February 2015, popular estimate is that between five and eight percent of the population has hazel eyes. This makes hazel eyes the third most common eye color after brown and blue.
Brown eyes are the most common eye color, with 55 percent of the world being brown eyed. Blue eyes are the second most common, with eight percent of the world having this eye color. Hazel eyes appear to shift back and forth between brown and green due to Rayleigh scattering of light and a moderate amount of melanin around the border of the eye . Hazel eyes are most common in places where blue, green and brown eyed people are intermixed.
