You can choose to have tight curls or wavy hair with a root perm. The three main steps of a root perm are wrapping your hair around the perm rods, applying the perm lotion and following it up with the neutralizer.
- Shampoo hair
Shampoo hair and rinse it with cool water. Follow up with a conditioner. Leave the conditioner on for five minutes before rinsing it out thoroughly.
- Dry hair with a towel
Use a towel to dry your hair to prepare it for the hair treatment. Use a gentle action to avoid creating hair friction.
- Slip on the protective gloves
Put on protective gloves to protect your skin from chemicals.
- Choose the perm rods
Perm rods are available in different sizes. A small perm rod is used for tight curls. A larger rod gives the hair a wavy look. Choose the perm rods according to the look you intend to create.
- Section your hair to fit the perm rods
Wind wet hair around the perm rods and securely fasten the rod.
- Apply perm solution
Apply the perm solution directly to the perm rods. Avoid direct contact with the skin to prevent a chemical burn.
- Cover the perm rods
Use a plastic cap to cover the perm rods. This seals in body heat and keeps the perm lotion from dripping.
- Process the perm
Follow the instructions that are in the product box, and leave the perm rods in place for the duration of the processing time.
- Apply neutralizing lotion
Rinse your hair and apply the neutralizer to every perm rod. Leave this lotion on the hair for five to 10 minutes to lock the curls and waves in place. Rinse your hair thoroughly with cool water. Remove the perm rods gently and dry your hair.
