"Periorbital cellulitis" means an infection of the eyelid or skin around the eye, according to MedlinePlus. It can occur after an injury near the eye allows germs to enter the wound, or it spreads from a nearby infected site such as sinuses.
Symptoms of periorbital cellulitis include redness or swelling near the eye or in the white part of the eye, explains MedlinePlus. The condition usually does not alter vision or cause pain. A medical professional orders tests such as a blood culture, blood test, CT scan or MRI scan to check for an infection and prescribes antibiotics to treat the infection.
