A person who collects stamps is called a philatelist. The American Philatelic Society is the world's largest group of stamp collectors, with approximately 32,000 members.
The society began in 1886 and serves collectors along with people who study postal history around the world. It sponsors seminars and stamp shows, and it runs the American Philatelic Center and the American Philatelic Research Library in Bellefonte, Penn.
Stamp collecting gained popularity after the introduction of the first album for collecting stamps in England in 1852. Stamp collectors often observe stamps closely to find variations in colors, watermarks and other elements. Additionally, stamp collectors often spot counterfeit stamps.
