What is an Australian drop bear?

An Australian drop bear is a fictitious marsupial said to resemble a koala. The creature has been part of Australian folk lore for years, with its existence perpetuated through various Internet sources.
The existence of the drop bear was given credence thanks to a webpage created by the Australian Museum on its official website. The museum describes the animal as a "large, arboreal, predatory marsupial" that resembles a koala bear but that has large fangs and sharp claws. It also states that the creature only attacks those who do not speak in an Australian accent. The creature is said to pounce on prey from above, sometimes even accidentally "dropping" onto human passersby.
