What color should my dog's gums be?
By Forinfos - 26/05/2026 - 0 comments
A healthy dog has pink gums. When pressure is applied to the gums with a finger and the pressure is subsequently removed, the area remains white for two seconds before it returns to the pink color. This is called the capillary refill test.
A dog's gum color provides clues to its health. A dog with blue gums is not receiving sufficient oxygen. White gums indicate internal or external blood loss. If the gums are gray or purple and the capillary refill test is slow, the dog is likely in shock. Bright red gums indicate a possible systemic infection or exposure to a toxin. Yellow gums are a sign of jaundice, which is a possible indication of liver problems.
