What is a coydog?

A "coydog" is a hybrid mix of a coyote and dog and is the result of these species mating in the wild. The Indiana Coyote Rescue Center indicates that while coydogs do exist, their population is believed to be very low based on limited opportunities for hybrid mating.

Several factors mitigate the potential for large coydog populations, including the fact that coyotes are often aggressive toward, and even eat, dogs. Another primary reason that unintentional mating of dogs and coyotes is rare is that they have very contradictory mating seasons and habits. For example, coyotes are more selective than dogs in choosing companions.
