Runny noses in dogs can be caused by dental problems, bacterial or fungal infections, foreign objects, and pneumonia, according to PetMD. In many cases, sneezing and nasal secretions are considered normal in dogs; however, consult a veterinarian if the symptoms are severe or persistent.

Treatment for nasal discharge in dogs depends on its underlying cause, according to WebMD. Bacterial and fungal infections may require antibiotics or anti-fungal medications. If the animal's runny nose is due to a nasal polyp, surgery may be needed. Surgery can also benefit dogs with chronic runny noses due to small nostrils or soft nasal cartilage.
