- Coat the thermometer with lubricant
Cover the tip of the thermometer with lubricating jelly.
- Insert the thermometer in the dog's rectum
Gently insert the tip of the thermometer into the dog's rectum.
- Read the thermometer
Remove and read the thermometer when it beeps, if using a battery-operated device, or wait for two minutes, then remove and read a traditional, mercury-filled thermometer. A dog's normal temperature is between 101 and 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
