Do female dogs mark their territory?

Female dogs mark territory by urinating. Unspayed female dogs are more likely to mark territory in this way than spayed females, especially when in heat.
Urine marking is an important means of social communication for both male and female dogs and may communicate dominance, submission, sexual availability, overstimulation or anxiety depending on the context. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the best way to prevent or reduce urine marking by a female dog is to spay the dog. Other methods of managing the behavior involve observing the context in which the marking behavior occurs and either avoiding those contexts or altering them to make urine marking less likely.
