Do foxes hibernate in the winter?

Foxes do not hibernate when it gets cold in the winter. They remain active throughout the year and generally live and hunt within a 1- to 2-mile radius. When extreme weather hits, foxes sometimes seek shelter for a couple of days, but they resume their normal activities once the weather passes.
Although foxes tend to live on their own, they become more social during the mating season in January. Males sometimes provide food for their mates after the babies, called kits, are born. Female foxes, or vixens, build multiple dens in an area and leave their kits behind when they leave to find food. If anything disturbs these dens, vixens move their kits to different dens in the same area.
