Wildcats are adaptable, hardy animals found in most habitats within their geographical range, including deserts, grasslands and forests. They typically avoid tropical rain forests and true deserts. The European wildcat mainly inhabits broad-leaved and mixed forests, while the Chinese alpine steppe cat prefers alpine meadows.
The African wildcat lives in true deserts, although its distribution in these areas is thin. Asian wildcats live in scrub deserts up to elevations of approximately 10,000 feet. Wildcats have few natural predators and are a Least Concern species according to the IUCN Red List. One of the few threats to the wildcat is interbreeding with the domestic cat.
