How long does a parakeet live?

On average, parakeets live anywhere from five to 15 years, although it is common for the pets to survive upwards of 20 years with proper care. A number of dietary factors contribute to the life expectancy of parakeets.

A diet of high-quality bird seed mix supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables is essential to a parakeet's health. Favorites include apple and pear slices, broccoli, carrots, leafy greens, melon, pineapple and tomato. Foods detrimental to a parakeet's health that should be avoided are avocado, carbonated beverages and those with caffeine, chocolate, fruit seeds and pits, potatoes, raw peanuts, rhubarb and tomato leaves.
