How long does it take to grow asparagus?

It takes approximately two to three years to grow asparagus from a crown plant to the vegetable capable of being harvested. While it is slow to mature into to a crop producing vegetable, an asparagus plant lasts up to roughly 20 years.

There are male and female asparagus plants, with female plants producing berries alongside the asparagus. As a cool season crop, it is best to plant during warm seasons. Asparagus plants do best when planted in compost or a soil mix and in a bed without weeds. It also needs excellent drainage as asparagus does not do well with additional moisture near the bottom of the plant. Refill soil as the asparagus stem grows, keeping about 4 inches of the stem exposed.
