What is the orange baboon tarantula?

By Forinfos - 13/05/2026 - 0 comments

The orange baboon tarantula is a tan to golden spider native to the dry Savannah scrublands of Africa, particularly in Kenya, Tanzania and Zaire. Reaching up to 6 inches in size, the nocturnal spider feeds on insects, small lizards and rodents.

Its body is covered in short hair, with longer hair lining the legs. Its color varies by geographical distribution. The burrowing species adapts to a variety of habitats and often lines its tunnels with silk. While popular in the exotic pet trade, the orange baboon tarantula is not recommended for beginners or those looking for a "hands-on" arachnid, as the species is known to be aggressive and bears a painful, venomous bite.
