How do you ship a dog?

To ship a dog, choose the travel date, visit the vet, purchase a kennel, make reservations for pet travel and prepare your pet for the trip. Make advance arrangements for your pet’s drop-off and pick-up at the airport.
- Choose the travel date
Choose a travel date for your pet, preferably at the same time you are flying. Summer may not be the best time, as airlines are not allowed to ship pets if the runway temperature exceeds 85 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are traveling during the summer, consider a nighttime flight.
- Visit the vet
Take your pet to a qualified vet. Have him check for parasites and give the required vaccinations. Obtain APHIS form 7001 from your vet, which is proof that your pet is healthy enough to fly.
- Purchase a kennel
Buy a dog kennel that is large enough to hold your dog and provisions. The kennel should be large enough for your pet to stand in and turn around. The pet crate also should be IATA-compliant.
- Make travel reservations
Reserve a flight for your pet through the Air Cargo department of the airline of your choice. Airlines normally charge based on the combined weight of the kennel and pet.
- Prepare your pet for the trip
Allow the dog to get used to the pet crate well before the trip. On the travel date, attach dry food and the pet’s identification documents to the kennel. Make arrangements for your pet to be dropped off and picked up at the airport.
