Do pincher bugs pinch?

A pincher bug, also known as an earwig, is able to pinch using forceps, also known as pincers, located on its abdomen and its tail end. Pincher bugs are not aggressive, but they can fasten onto skin if bothered. However, the pinch is not serious.

A pincher bug's forceps are used to defend itself and fight competing earwigs. Some species of this insect also protect themselves by releasing a malodorous liquid. The United States is home to over 20 species of earwigs. Though some adults are only a few millimeters long, others grow to be more than 2 centimeters. All species have a narrow build and two sets of wings.
