Pine cones come from pine trees, the most common type of coniferous tree in the world. Pine cones are part of the reproductive process of the pine tree, and there are both male and female cones. Male pine cones produce pollen that drifts and eventually finds female pine cones.
Approximately 100 species of pine tree exist. Pine trees live almost entirely within the Northern Hemisphere, although the Sumatran pine can live in the Southern Hemisphere. The height of pine trees can vary wildly by species, with some growing to only 4 feet and others approaching nearly 150 feet. Pine trees are known to have extremely long life spans if planted in ideal conditions.
