Where do pistachios grow?

Pistachios originated in Western Asia and are also grown in the Mediterranean and the western United States as of 2014. Due to advances in growing and processing technology, the U.S. leads the market in worldwide pistachio production.
Pistachio trees begin bearing fruit, the pistachio, after five to seven years of growth. The trees produce a biennial crop, meaning that a large harvest is followed by a smaller one the following year. Trees can bear fruit indefinitely. As the pistachios on the trees begin to ripen, they are picked, cleaned, roasted and packaged for distribution. Pistachio harvest takes place from late August through October.
