In the United States, California growers produce 98 percent of the domestic supply of pistachios. Utah, Texas, New Mexico, Nevada and Arizona are also home to pistachio growers.
The United States produces around 24 percent of the world’s supply of pistachios, as of 2015. Globally, the United States is second only to Iran in the number of pistachios produced and exported. This amounts to around 551 million pounds of pistachios per year, based on 2012 figures.
Pistachio trees are native to Asia Minor and thrive in desert climates and dry lands. Introduced to the United States in 1854, the commercial industry for pistachios did not evolve until the mid-1970s.
