How do you plant ginger?

Plant ginger by purchasing a ginger hand at a grocery store, preparing the root, finding a good location and planting the roots, or rhizomes, into the ground. You need ginger and a knife.
- Purchase a ginger hand
Find a hand of ginger with many outcroppings, or fingers, that are plump. Make sure the hand you choose isn't wrinkled or dried out, as this produces less appealing ginger.
- Prepare the root
Remove the fingers from the ginger root to separate out the rhizomes. The pieces need to be 1 to 2 inches long and have at least one bud.
- Dry out the roots
Place the ginger in an area where it can dry out.
- Choose a good planting location
Choose an outdoor planting location that has full or partial shade and well-drained sandy soil. The climate needs to be hot and humid with a soil temperature of at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit and a minimum outdoor temperature of 77 degrees. In cooler climates, plant the ginger in pots that can be brought indoors during cold weather.
- Prepare the soil
Dig a hole or furrow that is at least 12 inches deep.
- Plant the rhizomes
Place the rhizomes 15 inches apart in the furrow so that the eyes are facing upward. Cover them with at least 1 inch of dirt.
