How do you plant hibiscus outdoors?

Plant a hibiscus outdoors by choosing a sunny location, amending the soil with organic matter, digging a large hole and watering the plant. You need a hibiscus plant, organic matter or compost, a garden trowel and water.

1. Choose a good location

   Choose a location for your hibiscus plant where it can receive full sun. The temperature outside needs to be between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal growth. If your location undergoes yearly frosts, place the hibiscus near a heat source or a building.

2. Prepare the soil

   Use rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. If the soil is poor, amend it with organic compost. To improve the drainage of soil, mix sphagnum peat moss into the dirt or build a raised flower bed.

3. Dig the hole

   Dig a hole in the soil that is at least twice as wide as the plant's root ball and just as deep. If you are planting more than one hibiscus bush, leave 3 to 6 feet between the planting holes.

4. Plant the bush

   Gently remove the plant from its container, and place the root ball in the holes. Fill only half the hole with soil, and water it. This removes any air pockets. Once the water has drained, fill the rest of the hole with soil.
