When should you plant a hibiscus?

Hibiscus can be planted in the spring, summer or fall, says the National Gardening Association. Plant hibiscus in well-drained soil and in a location that gets plenty of sunlight.
Hibiscus plants should be spaced 3 to 6 feet apart if planting more than one shrub. Dig a hole just deep enough to fit the roots, and make the hole two to three times wider than the roots, explains the National Gardening Association. If the soil is poor quality, mix in compost before planting. Hibiscus plants require 1 inch of rain or watering per week. The plants can grow up to 15 feet tall, and when in bloom, they attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
